We understand that conventional shape of fins is round, circular or others (very basic). However, with the advent of additive manufacturing, more companies seem to be exploring new advanced heat transfer designs and mechanisms.

The client wants to understand the advances in new radical shapes (topology optimization or shape optimization designs) of conventional heat transfer devices like heat sinks and other heat exchangers like Radiator, Condenser, etc. in the industry (Automotive, Aerospace and other thermal related domains) to improve heat transfer and reduce pressure drop. The client also wants to see the optimization from an EV standpoint for the long run.

Topology Optimization in Heat Transfer Objective

To find the technologies on shapes (e.g. gyroid) or methods (e.g. increase surface roughness) or manufacturing methods (e.g. additive manufacturing) to improve heat transfer and reduce pressure drop in the industries (Automotive, Aerospace and other thermal related domains), particularly electric vehicles.

There are many examples of heat exchangers that can be used to transport heat. These types are defined by the system requirement and the physical method in which they move heat away from critical areas. Conduction is the transfer of heat energy by direct contact, Convection is the movement of heat by actual motion of fluids and Radiation is the transfer of energy with the help of electromagnetic waves.

Additive manufacturing technologies have expanded in many directions in recent years with applications ranging across numerous industries and applications, including into the thermal management of electronics. As metal 3-D printing techniques have improved and become commercially viable, engineers are using it to create innovative cooling solutions, particularly heat exchangers.

Heat exchangers are designed to efficiently transfer heat from one matter to another, and are being increasingly produced through the use of 3D printing these days, as the technology can increase their design customization and reduce corrosion.
