An Introduction to Versatile Video Coding (VVC) and Its Patent Pools

Versatile Video Coding (VVC) or ITU-T H.266 coding standard has developed as a successor to HEVC standard providing high compression efficiency and reducing the bit rate for coding purposes. Higher resolutions and superior visual performances are supported by this codec.
Declared Patent Pools
As VVC provides great compression efficiency with reduced bit rate, various assignees and/or inventors have been engaged in filing patents related to this technology. As many companies are developing and/or working on VVC technology this has led to vast VVC patent portfolio which further have led to various collaborations by some big players like LG, Qualcomm, NEC etc. to form a patent pool of declared VVC patents providing licenses to companies working on VVC related technology. Some of the prominent pools of declared patents for VVC are Access Advance Patent Pool and VIA Licensing Patent Pool.
JVCKENWOOD is the leading contributor to the Access Advance VVC patent pool, accounting for approximately 17% of the total declared patents. Other significant contributors include Sun Patent, DLLC, HFI, NEC, ETRI, General Electric, SK Telecom, Panasonic, ByteDance, and Toshiba, among others.
Main Players in VVC related patents
Tencent, Huawei, Qualcomm, LG electronics contribute around 6.64%, 6.47%, 5.93% and 5.68% of all granted VVC only patent families respectively. Further, in March 2025, Huawei announced its intention to join the Via Licensing Alliance's HEVC/VVC patent pool as both a licensor and licensee.
Licensor Market across Geographies
China tops the VVC patent contribution as Tencent and Huawei being major contributors followed by US, South Korea, Japan and Europe.
Conclusion
VVC is emerging as a key video compression standard, offering high efficiency and support for advanced resolutions. Major companies like JVCKENWOOD, Tencent, Huawei, Qualcomm, and LG are driving innovation, supported by patent pools such as Access Advance and VIA Licensing. With China leading in patent contributions and increasing global collaboration, VVC is set to become the standard for next-gen video technologies.
