Grazing & Pasture Management: Part 1

December 05, 2025

Landscape study covering patent and non-patent scientific literature disclosing grazing and pasture management technology trends for cattle/herd. Cattle includes such as cows, sheep, goat, buffalos, camels providing dairy products such as milk. Also, the literature covers monitoring or management of grazing, grass, herbs, pasture, prairies etc. (everything that is not processed into animal feed but consumed directly or indirectly by animals).

  • End objective of the study is providing technology trends for automatic identification systems for animals, e.g. electronic devices, transponders for animals; Livestock identification and management; Pasture management; Monitoring or measuring activity of cattle; Automated milking system; Healthy grasslands; Grazing management and feed budgeting; Precision farming: tools, systems etc. including herbicides, seeds for grass.
  • Specially highlighted are the emerging trends and the key origin areas that have played a significant role in the advancement of this industry till date. For e.g. new technologies such as GPS, virtual fencing, division of pasture, cutting robots, integrated diagnostic monitoring of animals etc.
  • We analyzed the data relevant to this domain in order to identify hot topics & growth directions by region, type of company, institution, etc.
  • Specific focus is on tools and technologies with or without data communication modules for grazing and pasture management. Also, automated milking system has been targeted.
  • The analysis was performed on one representative patent member per patent family for granted patents and published patent applications worldwide. Non-patent scientific literature is searched in English language across the globe.
  • Keywords and Class based, Assignee based search strategies were formulated and search was performed on patent databases. Keyword, inventor’s name, company name based search was conducted to identify non-patent scientific literature.
  • Preliminary screening was done based on title, abstract and claims to identify potentially relevant patent references. Detailed analysis and categorization was done on the basis of title, abstract and claims for the potentially relevant patents/published applications. Also, non-patent scientific literature was screened based on title, abstract text available publicly.
  • Relevant trends, Insights and Graphs which reflect the current shape of the technology as well as its future path based on the analysis were prepared.

Grazing & Pasture Management: IP Trends

Bibliographic Trends

In 2014-2020, various players filed patents in the domain, wherein approx. 30% of patent filing in this duration was performed by academic institutions, specially from China.

Top players in this duration are Inner Mongolia Agricultural University, Dowdupont, University of Inner Mongolia, Lanzhou University, Sony, Lely, China Agricultural University.

Above graphs are based on one member per family. The data for the current year (2020) is not complete

Interesting Reading:

Some start-ups or SMEs have started working in the grazing and pasture space in last five years, for example Bullcall LLC (established in 2017) filed a patent US2020029534A1 on method for detecting when an animal is in heat by using a sensor mounted on a bull and monitoring the activity of the bull in the proximity of the animal. Thereafter, the activity of the bull is analyzed before finally it is determined, based on the analyzed activity of the bull, whether or not the animal is in heat. This is achieved in large part by relying on the bull's natural instincts to predict when the cow is in heat. The method according to the invention closely monitors the bull's activities and from this, can determine with a good deal of accuracy whether or not the cow is in heat. Instead of mounting expensive monitoring equipment on each animal in the herd.
