Acquisition Information
Raytheon Company, major American industrial corporation with core manufacturing concentrations in defense and aerospace electronics.
Its electronics and defense-systems units produce air-, sea-, and land-launched missiles, radar and sonar systems, weapons sensors and targeting systems, communication and battle-management systems, and satellite components.
In 1928 Raytheon merged with Q.R.S. Company, an American manufacturer of electron tubes and switches, to form the successor Raytheon Manufacturing Company. In 1933 it diversified by acquiring Acme-Delta Company, a producer of transformers, power equipment, and electronic auto parts.
In 1945 the company expanded its electronics capability through acquisitions that included the Submarine Signal Company (founded in 1901), a leading manufacturer of maritime safety equipment. With its broadened capabilities, Raytheon developed the first guidance system for a missile that could intercept a flying target. In 1950 its Lark missile became the first such weapon to destroy a target aircraft in flight. Raytheon then received military contracts to develop the air-to-air Sparrow and ground-to-air Hawk missiles—projects that received impetus from the Korean War. In later decades it remained a major producer of missiles, among them the Patriot antimissile missile and the air-to-air Phoenix missile. In 1959 Raytheon acquired Apelco-Applied Electronics, which significantly increased its strength in commercial marine electronics. In the same year, it changed its name to Raytheon Company.
In 1980 Raytheon acquired Beech Aircraft Corporation, a leading manufacturer of general aviation aircraft founded in 1932 by Walter H. Beech. Raytheon expanded its aircraft activities by adding the Hawker line of business jets through the acquisition in 1993 of Corporate Jets Inc. from British Aerospace (now BAE Systems). As part of the Raytheon aircraft subsidiary, Beech and Hawker produced business jets such as the Hawker 800XP and Horizon, the Beechjet 400A, and the Premier I; the popular Beech King Air series of twin turboprops; and single-engine piston aircraft such as the Beech Bonanza. Beech's special-mission aircraft, the single-turboprop T-6A Texan II, was chosen to be the primary training aircraft for the U.S. Air Force and U.S. Navy.
In 1991, during the Persian Gulf War, Raytheon's Patriot missile received great international exposure, resulting in a substantial increase in sales for the company outside the United States. In an effort to establish leadership in the defense business, in 1996 Raytheon purchased in quick succession Chrysler Corporation's defense electronics and aircraft-modification businesses, and in 1997 it bought the defense electronics units of Texas Instruments as well as Hughes Electronics, maker of numerous missile systems. It also divested itself of several nondefense businesses in the 1990s, including Amana Refrigeration. In 2007 it sold its aircraft subsidiary, with its Beech and Hawker product line, to investors that named the new company Hawker Beechcraft, Inc.

1. KuRFS: Ku-band Radio Frequency System
- The Ku-band Radio Frequency System is a 360-degree radar that senses incoming drones, rockets, artillery and mortars. It can cue defensive weapons, and it can be set up within 30 minutes, either in a fixed location or on a vehicle.
- Raytheon Missiles & Defense built the KuRFS radar to help the U.S. Army defend against rocket, artillery and mortar attacks in Iraq and Afghanistan. Today, it is also used as a counter-unmanned aerial system radar.
- KuRFS uses a radar sensing technique called active electronically scanned array, which uses many small antennas, rather than a single powerful antenna, to allow for better control of the beam. It operates in the Ku-band of the electromagnetic spectrum, which allows for higher-resolution imaging – an important part of tracking smaller flying objects.
2. Sentinel Radar
- The AN/MPQ-64 Sentinel is a radar that alerts front-line air-defense weapons whenever it sees hostile planes, helicopters, drones or missiles.
- Sentinel™ is a three-dimensional radar, meaning it reports the range, bearing and elevation of the objects it is tracking.
- The radar supports several command and control interfaces, providing consistent air surveillance and fire-control data to weapons that counter unmanned aerial systems, cruise missiles and fixed-and rotary-wing aircraft. It works both at fixed sites and in highly mobile maneuver operations.
- More than 300 Sentinel radars are deployed around the world by the U.S. Army and allied armed forces.
3. Global Patriot™ Solutions
- Global Patriot™ Solutions is a missile defense system consisting of radars, command-and-control technology and multiple types of interceptors, all working together to detect, identify and defeat tactical ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, drones, advanced aircraft and other threats.
- Since it was first fielded, Patriot has been used by five nations in more than 250 combat engagements against manned and unmanned aircraft, cruise missiles, and tactical ballistic missiles.
- The result of the improvements and enhancements is that today's Patriot is advanced, modern, and capable of defeating the full spectrum of threats. It shares the same name and basic purpose of the Patriot of the past, but that is where the similarity ends.
- Patriot has continually embraced new technologies to stay ahead of evolving threats. As a result, with a few small exceptions, such as heaters and cooling fans, the bulk of the system has been modernized over the past 17 years.
- This is possible because Patriot's architecture is flexible and designed in a manner that allows it to be continually upgraded and improved.
- This on-going modernization is funded by members of the Patriot partnership – a 17-nation consortium of Patriot users which has invested significantly in improvements, enhancements and upgrades over the past 20 years.
