Objective of the Study

We understand that porous transport layer (PTL) is a vital component of the electrochemical devices such as polymer electrolyte membrane water electrolyzer (PEMWE). The water electrolysis cell utilizes the electrical energy to split water into hydrogen and oxygen gas and has become the most promising and environmentally friendly method for highly pure hydrogen production.

We have also noted that the water electrolysis cell composed of key components including membrane/separator, electro-catalyst, porous transport layer (PTL) and bipolar plate. PTL particularly at the anode side of system called as “Anode Porous Transport Layer” are commonly composed of titanium metal/metal fibers which shows electrochemical stability at the high potentials of the oxygen evolution reaction. PTL or gas diffusion layer (GDL) is a layer between a catalyst layer and a bipolar plate, which not only provides the pathway for transporting the reactants/products during the electrochemical reactions but also electrically connects the catalyst layer to the bipolar plate. PTL is responsible for a better utilization of the catalyst layer (CL).Therefore, PTL manufacturing and design imparts a great impact on cell efficiency and electrochemical performance of PEMWE system. Critical parameters of PTL such as PTL materials, structural properties, pore

size, porosity, pore gradient, thickness and their function play an important role in construction of an optimized electrolyzer cells for green hydrogen production.
