Introduction

Trimmers are versatile grooming tools used for maintaining facial hair, body hair, and even head hair. They offer precise trimming and shaping capabilities, allowing individuals to achieve their desired look.

How Trimmer works

The trimmer mechanism allows for a linearly reciprocating motion to be used to obtain a close trim or shave. The trimmer mechanism includes two sets of blades that are moveable relative to each other to define a pair of cutting zones. One set of blades provides a coarse trim, while the following set of blades provides a finer trim.

The main blade oscillates between the fixed blades to create shearing action and when hairs fall in grooves of the blades, they are sheared off. The main blade also gets sharpened due to rubbing.

Evolution of Trimmers

Manual Clippers (19th Century)

  • Hair clippers are operated by a pair of handles which are alternately squeezed together and released. Barbers used them to cut hair close and fast.
  • Manual clippers were invented around 1855 by Nikola Bizumić, a Serbian barber. While they were widely used in the distant past

Electric clippers (20th Century)

  • Electric hair clippers work in a similar way as manual ones, but are driven by an electric motor which makes the blades oscillate from side to side. They have gradually displaced manual hair clippers in many countries. Three different motor types are used in clipper production: magnetic, rotary and pivot. Rotary style may be driven by direct current or alternating current electricity source.
  • Leo J. Wahl invented the first electric hair clipper. Leo continued to work on his inventions and by 1921, he patented his final design of an invention more than a decade in the making- the first electric hair clipper. Within a year, Wahl Manufacturing had manufactured and sold thousands of clippers all over the United States and in 1921 Leo renamed the company the Wahl Clipper Corporation.

Electric clippers (21st Century)

  • The 20th and 21st centuries have played host to a continuous stream of technological advancements in hair clippers.
  • And that has made these tools versatile, convenient, and more user-friendly than ever before.
  • Adjustable blades, self-sharpening mechanisms, and cord/cordless operation form the tip of the iceberg of features we enjoy today.
  • Electric hair clippers are now used to create a wide range of styles; from fades and tapers.
  • Brands like Wahl, Andis, Oster, Caliber, Stylecraft, Gamma+, and the rest have gone above and beyond to create the best hair clippers for different hair types.
  • Evolution of hair clippers won't stop now! The hair clippers continue to evolve, incorporating new technologies and adapting to changing trends.

Recent Technical Advancement in Trimmers

In an era where grooming has become an essential part of self-care, beard trimmers have undergone a significant evolution. These devices have come a long way from basic, manual clippers to sophisticated gadgets equipped with cutting-edge technologies.

Length Settings

One of the most significant advancements in beard trimmers is precision trimming technology. These devices now come with adjustable length settings that allow users to select their desired beard length with precision. This means no more uneven or messy trims.

Superior Blades

Blades were a major source of issue for skin irritation and problems of longevity for the fear of rust settling in. With modern blades made of skin-friendly titanium and stainless steel, one can easily get better and safe beard trimming with no fear posed to the skin.

Cordless Operation

Modern beard trimmers have bid farewell to tangled cords. Cordless operation, powered by chargeable batteries, has become the new standard. This eliminates the need to be tethered to a power outlet while trimming, providing greater flexibility and convenience. Many of these trimmers also offer long-lasting battery life, so you won't have to worry about recharging them frequently.

Waterproof Design

Waterproofing is another innovation that has made beard trimmers more versatile and user-friendly. Many models are now designed to be fully waterproof, allowing users to trim their beards in the shower or easily clean the trimmer under running water.
