Drug Therapy is used to treat many type of diseases such as Cancer. Drugs interact with receptors or enzymes in cells to promote healthy functioning and reduce or cure illness. The most prominent drug therapy used for the treatment of cancer is Imatinib Mesylate (Gleevec).

Description of the Imatinib Mesylate (Drug Therapy):

Imatinib Mesylate is the drug which is sold under the brand name, “Gleevec“. The Imatinib Mesylate is a chemotherapy medication which is used to treat cancer.

• Preferably, it is used for treatment of a variety of cancer forms, such as:
• Chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML), and Acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL) are Philadelphia chromosome-positive (Ph+) and are a cancer of the white blood cells.
• Newly diagnosed adult and pediatric patients with Philadelphia chromosome positive chronic myeloid leukemia (Ph+ CML) in chronic phase.
• (Ph+) CML in blast crisis, accelerated phase, or chronic phase after failure of interferon-alpha therapy.
• Adult patients with relapsed or refractory Philadelphia chromosome and acute lymphoblastic leukemia (Ph+ ALL).
• Adult patients with myelodysplastic/myeloproliferative diseases (MDS/MPD) associated with PDGFR gene rearrangements.
• Gastrointestinal stromal tumors that are C-kit positive.

• Imatinib was approved for medical use in the United States in 2001.
• It is on the World Health Organization's List of Essential Medicines, the most effective and safe medicines needed in a health system.
• The wholesale cost in the developing world is about 1,386.49 to 19,162.50 USD a year.
• In the United States, a typical dose for a year has a wholesale cost of $84,408.78.
• In the United Kingdom, the NHS (National Health Service) was paying about 20,980.08 pounds in 2016.
• A generic version became avaliable in the UK as of 2017.

How Imatinib Mesylate Is Given:

• Imatinib mesylate is a pill, taken by mouth, once or twice daily.
• Imatinib mesylate should be taken with a large glass of water, after a meal.
• The amount of Imatinib mesylate depends on many factors, including your general health or other health problems, and the type of cancer or condition being treated.
