Smart Materials: Self-Healing Concrete

Overview

Basilisk believes in a sustainable world which offer a range of bio-based products that make concrete more sustainable, durable and waterproof.

Key Criteria

  1. Waterproof Concrete Self-healing concrete seals cracks, making special coatings or waterproof membranes unnecessary.
  2. 40% reinforcement savings Shrinkage reinforcement is reduced because larger crack widths can be accepted with self-healing concrete.
  3. 30-50% Reduction in CO2 A smaller CO2 footprint due to the longer design life, the omission of membranes and the reduced need for shrinkage reinforcement.
  4. Less maintenance cost Self healing reduces in maintenance cost for both the repair of existing concrete and new concrete. It also extends service life.

How it works?

The technology relies on microorganisms that produce limestone, allowing cracks in concrete structures to be autonomously repaired.

  • Cracks up to 1 mm can be repaired with self-healing concrete, with ongoing development to improve the technology.

Process Steps:

  1. Concrete Cracks Cracking is an accepted and common phenomenon in concrete structures.
  2. Leaks & Corrosion Cracked concrete can lead to significant leakage and corrosion of reinforcement.
  3. Autonomous Repair When exposed to water, the bacteria multiply and begin producing limestone.
  4. Sealed Cracks The formation of limestone autonomously repairs cracks & preventing leakage

Project Case: Hulstkamp building

A distinctive reference project is the Hulstkamp building.

  • Basilisk Healing Agent was used in the basement construction, which serves as a parking garage.
  • The concrete became watertight, improving durability.
  • Shrinkage reinforcement was reduced by about 35%, saving materials.
  • Less steel needed, cutting CO₂ emissions by nearly half and reducing costs.

Construction Opportunities Developed:

  • Tunnel & Bridges
  • Flooring Decks
  • Waste Water Plant
  • Marine & Harbor

Evides chooses waterproof self-healing concrete for its waste water treatment plant:

  • The settling tank is part of the expansion of Evides' wastewater treatment plant in the Netherlands.
  • Evides Industriewater is the leading industrial water partner in the Benelux region.

A 25-meter diameter tank was built with Basilisk Healing Agent for waterproofing and extended service life.

  • Client: Evides Industrial water
  • Size: 110 m³
  • Structure: Settling tank
  • Status: Completed
