What we did
Given the novel nature of the bios-surfactant use in personal care, the scope was kept broad to get maximum results. The gave the inmforation to the following:
Demonstrate that Rhamnolipids are effective as primary surfactant in cleansing formulations such as shampoos, conditioners, body wash and hand soaps. Also, the study will include formulations/ blends, benefits, and properties of rhamnolipids - foam profile, skin mildness, viscosity of final formulation, and their benchmarking with SLES/Betaine, etc.
Skin Care Emulsifier -Demonstrate that Rhamnolipids are effective as emulsifier for formulation or lotion base of readily spreadable w/o and o/w emulsions able to displace silicone emulsifiers. Also, the study will include properties of rhamnolipids - spreadability, emulsification, emulsion stability, skin sensory feel, viscosity profile and their benchmarking with silicones, e.g. D5 cyclomethicone.
Skin Care Anti-aging -Demonstrate that Rhamnolipids are effective for the treatment of wrinkles, age-spots, and other visual/consumer-perceptible signs of aging. Also, the study will include benefits demonstrated by gene expression for improved collagen and elastin gene expression, and improved consumer-perceptible anti-aging benefits as compared to market-leading benchmarks.
Skin Care Reduction of Redness -Demonstrate that Rhamnolipids are effective for the treatment/prevention of skin irritation/redness. Parity or superior to commercially available anti-irritants such as Squalane and/or other benchmarks. Synergy with squalane and/or other benchmarks as a boost in efficacy
Skin Care Microbiome -Demonstrate that Rhamnolipids are effective for the beneficial balance of skin microbiome. The ‘Shannon Index’ is considered a valid parameter which indicates the diversity and distribution of the different species. For each skin region with an individual microbiome, the following applies – the higher the Shannon Index, the more natural and healthier the skin flora.
Skin Care Reduction of Acne -Demonstrate that Rhamnolipids are effective for the reduction, treatment, or prevention of acne. Benchmarks: salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide; Superior or parity performance of reduction of microorganisms responsible for acne; Superior or parity performance of reduction of redness and microscopic images of skin.
Skin Care Wound Care -Demonstrate that Rhamnolipids are effective for the treatment/acceleration of wound healing. Identifying efficacy and perform benchmarks – aloe, etc.
Skin Care Antifungal -Demonstrate that Rhamnolipids are effective for the treatment/prevention of foot fungus. Screen against industry benchmark ingredients.
Skin Care Flavor Emulsifier -Demonstrate that Rhamnolipids are effective emulsifiers for flavors relevant to oral care toothpastes and mouthwashes. Demonstrate effective emulsification vs. industry benchmark of poloxamer 407; Cinnamon oil (0.2%), Poloxamer 407 benchmark (0.3%); Peppermint oil (0.2%) Poloxamer 407 benchmark (0.5%).
Skin Care Natural Surfactant -Demonstrate that Rhamnolipids are effective co-surfactants for natural oral care toothpastes. Demonstrate effective foaming vs. industry benchmark of SLS; Provide better foaming and taste profile than APG’s; Provide emulsification benefit for flavor oils in formulation.
Skin Care Antiseptic -Demonstrate that Rhamnolipids are effective for the treatment/prevention of biofilm formation for oral care relevant bacteria. Also, including Anti-plaque, Anti-gingivitis, reducing bad breath. Natural alternative (rhamnolipid) with equivalent to superior performance vs. Industry benchmarks (CPC, essential oils)
Skin Care Anti-Dandruff -Demonstrate that Rhamnolipids are effective for the treatment/prevention of dandruff. Stand alone antidandruff active: parity or superior to ZPTO; Stabilizing ingredient for ZPTO, Selenium sulfide; Synergy with ZPTO. Also, the study will include viscosity and foam profiles and stability.
Skin Care Contact Lens Surfactant -Demonstrate that Rhamnolipids are effective as surfactants for contact lenses OR as an antiviral/microbial for eyecare. Parity or superior in preservation of contact lens storage solution Vs. Onamer M; Mildness: parity or superior Vs. Onamer M.
Our Approach
We propose the study to be conducted in four three for all five personal care categories –
- Phase I
We will perform a technical level analysis for each section in terms of role of rhamnolipids, properties of the final product, benefits, comparison with other ingredients or their products in the same section. - Phase II
We will provide FTO observation for each section by limiting the patent data to last 20 years worldwide. - Phase III
We will perform white space analysis for each section of personal care applications including Cleansing, Skincare, Oral Care, Scalp care & Eye care.
