Alternative to PFAS

Objective:
The objective of the study was to find alternative solutions for PFAS as coating agents, wherein the solutions can provide a positive impact on aquatic ecosystems and human health and at the same time eliminate potential hazards to the environment with other economical benefits. The alternative solution should match the performance of PFAS coating applications such as grease and water repellence. Also, the solution should be cost-effective and environment-friendly at the same time.

Background:
Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are man-made chemicals used to make fluoropolymer coatings and products that resist heat, oil, stains, grease, and water. Among PFASs, perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) and perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) have gained more attention because of their potential adverse effects on aquatic ecosystems and human health. With the emerging awareness of the potential health and environmental impacts of PFAS and related limitations on the production of some PFAS, manufacturers began efforts to replace the use of long-chain PFAS chemistries with non-fluorinated chemicals, alternate technologies, and/or other, shorter-chain PFAS which should be economical and eco-friendly. Some of the replacement chemicals are said to achieve the same performance effectiveness as PFAS.

What we did

After evaluating the scope the study aimed to answer the following questions-

  • What are the alternative chemicals that can be used as a coating agent instead of PFAS - in order to meet regulatory guidelines?
  • Do the alternative coating chemicals show similar performance as that of PFAS?
  • What are the performance parameters of alternative coating chemicals?
  • What is the possible impact of alternative chemicals on the environment and human health?
Market Assessment
  • Which chemical companies have prohibited the use of PFAS as coating agents and are looking for alternative solutions with similar properties of PFAS?
  • What are the key success market stories for the use of alternative chemicals as coating agents instead of PFAS?
