Alternative solution to PFAS in Packaging Industry

The objective of the study was to look for alternative solution of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) for coating of the package in packaging industry.

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are used to make fluoropolymer coatings and products that resist heat, oil, stains, grease, and water for packaging applications. Thus, it is a necessity to reduce effects on aquatic ecosystems and human health. Among PFASs, perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) and perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) have gained more attention than other compounds because of their potential adverse effects. Various physical and chemical alternatives to the use of PFAS for creating physical barrier properties in paper and board exist.

The alternative solution should match the performance of PFAS packaging applications. Also, the solutions should be cost effective and environment friendly to provide packaging applications.

What we did

The study was conducted into 2 Phases:

Phases 1 answered the following questions:
  • What are the alternative solutions to PFAS for coating of the package in packaging industry to meet regulatory guidelines?
  • Do the alternatives to PFAS in the packaging industry match the performance/properties of PFAS’s packaging applications?
  • What is the possible impact (positive and negative) of PFAS alternatives on aquatic ecosystems and human health?
Market Assessment
  • Which companies have completely prohibited or restricted the use of PFAS in their food packaging and what alternatives are they currently using?
  • What are the key success market stories of PFAS alternatives in food packaging applications?
Phases 2 was a business case study that was conducted on the top 2 recommandations from Phase 1, which looked to answer the following:
  • Brief Introduction to the business opportunity
  • Profitability earn by business opportunity
  • Opportunity description
  • Technology summary
  • Key advantages of the technology
  • Key benefits of business opportunity
  • Comparative analysis of selected business opportunities, e.g. SWOT analysis
  • Future growth of the company based on business opportunity

Project Timeline:The study was executed and delivered in 12 weeks.
